this album is breath taking!!!!!!!!!! i can listen to it over and over agian, i dont think i'll ever get tired of listening to it!!!!!

A much maligned album by die hard fans, this album deserves much more aclaim that it gets. Sure its not HOLV, but its Twins stripped down in sound. Not so over the top, it reveals songs that remain in conventional pop structures. Which is a sign of them stretching out and tweaking their sound. As much as I claim to love HOLV as my fave, I seem to come back to FCC just as often.

...hmm...although this album is better than "Blue Bell Knoll", it's not quite as good as "Milk & Kisses" and not nearly as good as "Heaven or Las Vegas"...I do love it, though...especially some of the standout tracks like "Know Who You are at Every Age", "Bluebeard", "Summerhead" and "Pur"...I have an interesting comment on "Pur"...this song reminds me so much of "Frou-Frou Foxes...." from the album "Heaven or Las Vegas"...it starts of slow and seductive and it picks up with a wonderful bridge and ends with a flash of light and intensity...it seems like all of the Twins' albums end with a song that really leaves you breathless...they probably planned it that way.."Seekers Who are Lovers" falls under the same category... I love the singing in this album.Some songs may sound the same and a bit "maniaco-depressing"(I'm not trying to be rude) but some songs really touch you.I still prefer milk and kisses.

The four calendars are in effect. It's not often that one gets to hear such a fine album of tunes, though I'll say this: The first time that I heard Evangeline, I was not impressed. I hated its slow, languidity, the way it loped along from measure to measure, pleasure to pleasure. So how did I come to finally enjoy this album? Simple: I bought it. Then, after countless nights spent ruminating its significance over a cup of Green Mountian Coffee and my girlfriend, I came to understand it. It, as they say, grew on me. The first song, with its wash of wah/phase shifted guitars is certainly among my favorites, with Bluebeard being up there as well. I'd have to cite Oil of Angels and Summerhead as being the third and second runners up, respectively, for each has a driving pulse that makes it really groove. My final, however, and absolute favorite tune on Four Calendar Cafe is the last tune, Pur. This gem has all of the trappings of classic Cocteau Twins beauty: A sweeping, bold introduction, replete with Robin's (as usual) excellent, driving guitar work, Liz's gorgeous vocals floating high above, and Simon's Bass slinking around in the shadows. The song is fairly slow (not above 65 or 70 beats per minute, if I'm not mistaken). It's one of the most beatiful songs that they've ever done in my opinion, so much so that upon listening to it in said girlfriend's car one evening, I felt compelled to shed just a few tears. This is my only CT album yet but I enjoy it very much! I'm still wondering how did the engineer "muffled" Liz voice but at the same time it's still sound beautiful? It's true that we should take advantage of the lyric-enigma...Bravo CT! I love the way the bass go in the background.. very powerful! I like 4CC because of Faye Wong's covers...Faye did much creative copycat from CT!!! Her last album feature a song recorded in September Sound and support by Robin &Simon! The Queen of Asian Diva totally emulated CT's style Just want to say that CT is so influential!

Hi. I'm Danny and I bought this album a year ago. It was dissapointing musically, until I had a go at deciphering the lyrics, and then everything fell into place. I love the spirit of self- affirmation that runs through this album. Having had a nervous breakdown myself (like Liz did while working on this album) I love the way she sings about relationship breakup, attending therapy, beginning to love one's self for who you really are... I love it. Especially gorgeous is one of the last lines of 'Evangeline' (I was a famous artist, everybody took me seriously / Even those who did never understood me) ... HEARTBREAKING! I was just on a trip to Bergen, the second largest city in Norway and i was looking through some record-stores, when i found a copy of Four Calendar Cafe. This means i now have completed my collection of Cocteau Twins-albums. I still miss a few EPs, though. After reading various reviews and listening to a few sound-clips from the internett, my expectations was pretty low. But how happy i was after a few listenings!!! A fantastic album with lots of highlights. The whole thing is like one song, only with 9 breaks. A very upbeat album indeed! Bluebeard, Squeeze-wax, Summerhead and Pur. But the best thing about this album, is that it contains the most beutifull song i have ever heard from the Cocteau Twins; Know who you are at every age!!! So sad and heartbreaking; i cant heal unless i cry. This is like a soundtrack from my trip to Bergen which hadd lots of special experiences atteched to it. I really can let go when listening to this album. I'm in this Cafe all the time. A heartbreaking piece!!! The sound is so warm and welcoming, i feel very special. It gives me a new light to life. This album has been my friend for a long time. I first bought it in 94. Having a short attention span I rarely play a CD from start to finish. Not only does it make the cut, It has never bored me or not made me feel the same way as the first time I heard it. Oil of Angels would have to be my Favorite if I had to pick one. This one fits any mood. I could care less how sucessful a CD its how it makes me FEEL. FCC does the job and then some.

i have to admit 4cc is my least favorite.. but.. its a must have for these reasons: know who u are at every age.. & pur. i agree with many others who posted a review.. it is the most "accessible" album. and what I enjoy most about the CTs.. is their unique depth.. mystery.. & bite. the majority of 4cc only touches on these things.. rather than indulging. i dont listen to this cd often.. but i really value it. it compliments a moment in ones life.. where there may be a need for something calming for example: a moment of change or a sense of lost comfort.

I won't go so far as to say that this is my favorite cocteau album only because that would be like trying to choose a favorite limb. That said of all the albums this one in particular touches me in a way that NO other work of art ever has. It evokes such beauty and pain it leaves me floating in a sort of limbo. I don't know whether to cry or smile. Production-wise it's by far one of the best musical landscapes ever recorded, the constant guitar swells take you on an emotional rollercoaster that keeps you begging for more! Lyrically Liz offers more on this album as far as understandabilty, not that you need to understand the language to understand the feelings behind them. The euphoria that they have created on this album has provide a frequent escape for me from the usual slop that is forced down my ears and for this I owe them much respect and priceless graditude, but as I said in the begining this is just one of my favorite limbs so buy them all!

i love cocteau twins to death but this album could be sung by Tim Noah or Barney its so cheesy. But the songs "oil of angels" and "essense" are great. (I don't mean to sound so down, but have they used the same drums and guitar for every single album??)Except for "treasure." One of the band members must have found a different drum machine in the attic or something.

I always heard a lot about this band, but I never heard anything by them until I heard Four Calender Cafe being played at a Blockbuster Music here in Houston. I fell in love with it instantly. Eventually I bought Four Calender. The first song I liked was Bluebeard, but now I love the whole album. I have given it heavy rotation since I first bought it in Feb of 1998. I just can't believe I am just now discovering them when they have been around since 1982. I can think back to when I was complaining that there wasn't any good music, all the while I could have been checking out the Cocteau Twins. I have a hard time deciphering what Liz is trying to say on most of the album and an even harder time trying to tell if it is English, but the gorgeousness of her voice and the music make up for it all. Picks of this litter in my opinion are "Summerhead", "Know Who You Are At Every Age", "Evangeline", "Bluebeard", and "Theft, and Wandering Around Lost". My mind paints pictures every time I listen to this record. It's weird because in some ways, it is ear candy, but it's not because I am still listening to it. It sucks you in deeper and deeper upon repeated listen. Some people don't like this disc in comparison to their older discs. I, on the other hand, have been looking for something like this for quite a while now. They pull off beautifully the type of sound that I was hoping the Cranberries would attempt. Cocteau Twins are where it's at.

When I first heard Faye Wong sang BLUEBEARD and KNOW WHO YOU ARE AT EVERY AGE,I liked it a lot Then,I wanted to find the composer of this song. It was the CT and from then on I started buying their c CDs.And the first one I got was Milk and Kisses. I liked it a lot.Then, I started buying the rest of their CDS. The album in itself is a very nice collage of sounds, accented by the delightful voice of Liz Fraser, with some wonderful additions like "Evangeline", and Theft, and wandering around lost". The overall feel was not as intoxicating as "Heaven or Las Vegas", but then again, what else could be. Fine album, never-the-less, one definitely worth having for meditation and relaxing after work.

I still think this one takes place in an airport. Or maybe a string of airports all over the world, in a kind of jet-set twilight realm. Images of a coffeshop or lounge in the LAX complex, melancholy and exhaustion, upper class burnout. It's a strange thing to say, but "Know Who You Are.." reminds me of big log by Robert Plant. Or maybe just the Southern Cal. sunset. I hated the video for "Bluebeard". I thought it should have been a stop-motion animated rodeo of toys, a-la Gumby. And, of course, there's the exquisite, exquisitely icy, breezy lonely yachting jaunt of "Evangeline", the Malibu epiphany of "Essence", the Miami thunderstorm of "Summerhead" that calls to mind a more delicate re-interpretation of Head Over Heels or Tiny Dynamine. The joyous space-oddity of Pur. This record isn't one of my favorites because it's damn depressing, both because it sounds like the aftermath of a breakdown and because the environment it creates is damn snooty. It snubs me. I can't relate. We should all be so lucky as to be such an extravagant waste.

This lovely album provides the listener with a very "fluid" musical experience. The sounds and songs flow together, but, each is distinct as well. I feel this collection works as a "whole" more than any other CT release, save for VICTORIALAND. The songs are seamless blends of mysterious, beautiful sounds & revealing, heartfelt vocals. The lyrics that surface here and there are reflective and personal without being precious. The songs are well-sequenced, with upbeat selections like "Summerhead" and "Bluebeard" contrasting effortlessly with the gentler, more fragile songs. As a bonus, the recording quality is a deft blend of recognizable components and a unifying overall lushness. (That's enough gushing for one review.) Listen to FOUR CALENDER CAFE. And pick up the EVANGELINE ep, the bonus tracks are essential companions to FOUR CALENDER CAFE.

My favorite twins album. One of the great moments of pop music, indeed. I cant even tell 4 songs which i prefer from this record. By the time I listen to it, I had a relation with a girl which broke after 7 years together. This album really helped me through the first months of solitude. I think it could be the best collection of songs for a loving person who loves great music to listen when making love with someone special. Women & their beauty, their secrets, their desires, their mistakes,... women. Perhaps the best word to this album. All represented in a unique performance by Liz. The witch, blowing in my ears everything a man like me would expect from a lady (and Im not talking bout the lyrics,no). I rate it with 10 and all songs are individual masterpieces. It worths to be alive just to listen to it.

I think that this album is great. It gives me chills and makes me feel like I'm floating. The album is best when listened to all the way through. "Summerhead," is like a fortelling that the final song is the next to come, with "Pur" being the finale. This gives the album a very climatic effect at the end. What can I say? The whole album is gorgeus.

I can always count on the Cocteau Twins. Okay, so I know it's 1998 and 4CC is 3 or so years old, but I can't stop listening to this. I anticipated this album as much as any CT release; I can remember being somewhat disappointed. 4CC lacks the immediate appeal of BBK or HOLV. Pur is the only track that elicited that ear to ear smile and rush of blood to the back of the head when the Victorialand intro succumbs to the slamming chorus: " I am not afraid of your anger, destroy the objective, but still survive. You are angry and that's ok, What do you need, what do you want?" I can't tell you the damage I must have done to my hearing - whatever is the highest setting on your stereo is about two notches too little. Bluebeard and Summerhead have catchy melodies and are fine for humming along, but the real beauty lies in those songs I had originally forsaken: Finally know who you are at every age, Evangeline, My Truth, Squeeze-Wax. This is an album about life and self-discovery and self- honesty that is the riskiest and most courageous work they've done. This isn't about the reeling swirls (eg drops and bbk) and gut-wrenching angst (Garlands) of adolescence and early adulthood. Here is a beautiful tribute to going through some serious shit and coming out the other side to find out that its ok to be who you are and fuck the rest. Forget the mania and self-pretension (sorry fans, Treasure) and what you once thought life was all about. Growing up is painful and so is self-discovery. I'm sick of the naysayers who were clamoring for discernable lyrics and then when they got them were disappointed because there wasn't some profound and enigmatic subtext to decode. Liz is human and that, my friends, is what is so profound. Going through self-doubt, depression and then earning the appreciation for life that so many take for granted is the hardest and most rewarding endeavor any human can undertake. And, then, to be so courageous as to put it on a medium for thousands to scrutinize and pick apart is no less a 'gift from god' (the ubiquitous CT phrase) than the euphoria elicited by the complex arrangement of guitar, soaring vocals, and percussion. This, of course, is only my opinion. I doubt anyone cares enough to read through the entirety of my diatribe. But Liz, if you do read this, thank you. This is a gift, but not from god. This is a gift from Liz.

Three of my top 5 records of the 90s are Heven or Las Vegas, Four Calendar Cafe and Milk and Kisses. Although the music of CT is nowhere near to being commercialized for mass appeal I do think the CT music of the 90s has a bit more pop sensibility than that of the 80s works. The 90s works certainly contain a bit more consistancy within the songs and are a little more "happier" at best. One of these three are always in my cd changer and I usually go to sleep to one of them at the end of a day. Great music to have slow, romantic sex to as well! Anybody else agree?

I first heard about the cocteau twins when I asked afriend to turn up the tunes...I immediately thought I had to go out and by this cd. he was listening to bluebeard. I forgot about anything else I ever heard and totally became a fan ...especially pur!!!!see i had just brought a daughter into this world and the words touched home. Not that anyone could understand the lyrics or would want to. I love the twins.

Although I enjoyed this album as much as I might anything the Twins put out, it sounds,especially in retrospect, transitional. I'm happy to see artists' styles change, precisely because they choose directions I wouldn't. But the sound here is buried under studio technique. My only live experience was this album's tour and it was mesmerizing but also more raw than anything I'd heard since "Garlands". The difference in sound reminds me of a tape I have of Lush's "Spooky" tour (sorry, folks, I know it's a cheap comparison, but I'll bet there's a lot of listener overlap and I was psyched to see the Twins credited in the liner notes of "Lovelife"). Finally, yes, I'm glad that the band has a wider appeal but when I heard "Bluebeard" in a convenience store, I had mixed feelings.

This album could be the soundtrack for moments in my life. I have been known to have it in my car CD player for days at a time. From the first time i heard Sunburst and Snowblind, i knew that the Cocteau Twins were a band i would like to keep up with. But, when I first heare Four Calendar Cafe, i realized that the Twins were an irreplaceable gift from God. I love all the tracks on the album, but my favorites are Know Who you are at Every Age and Summerhead. Props to the Cocteau Twins for their talent and creativeness.

Upon first listening to this album, I was kind of embarassed that I understood the words. I thought the inside information had been broken. However, upon listening to "Pur" at the end of the CD I knew everything was still true. So soft at the beginning, gently flicking and teasing your senses, it's amazing. Then at the 2 minute mark, it all falls into place. It's just like making love when you're both right beyond the point of no return. Yeah, that very moment, when you both know it's happening. That is what hits you when "Pur" kicks into it. F**king awesome, it makes you want to lay there hypnotically without moving afterwards and dream.

Pur and Treasure Hiding is among the two of my very favorite all accessible tracks. It can be played in clubs. It can be played in your headphones at Subway. It can be played in the car. It can be played while taking a shower. It can be played at a graduation party. It could be played while having sex with your girlfriend. In the darkness and cool solace of your room. It could be played at the end of the night at a wedding. But one crucial and critical point. It would have to played more than ordinarily louder than a person is used or is accustomed to. The explosion of cymbal crashes and the controlled wail and scream of Robin Guthrie's stratocaster on "Pur" of Four Calendar Cafe. Ofcourse with Liz's voice. I have never heard such a perfect balance and pitch struck in any recording. Some CD's I just can't go without. Cocteau Twins - Four Calendar Cafe. Liz's - Treasure Hiding. Plus many other songs to long to list all here. Lou Reed's - Magic and Loss. Jennifer Rush's - The Power of love. Jane Sieberry's - When I was a boy. Liz's voice and lyrics and uniqueness are comparable to me like the beauty of Bette Midler's lyrics - to "The Rose" song. It takes a long time to carefully formulate what you carefully want to say is right about Cocteau Twins and their albums and songs. There is no way to be lucid, succinct, concise, and critical. I could talk about the beauty of this album(and all the reasons I love it) for days, but what sets it apart for me at the 'end of the day' is the album closer, 'Pur'. It is a sweeping testimony to this band's true power. Hearing it live in June of '96 was absolutely sublime. An encore never to be forgotten.

I don't care what any of you guys say, This first CD I ever bought by the Cocteau Twins is like a turning point of sorts. Sure I am ignorant and biased but oh well. On this album there is such honesty and clarity. On all the ones I've heard there is. I named my CD player Evangeline and felt it was appropiate.

Upon lisening to this album all I can say is AHHHHH and WOW. this is an amazing album. In Evangeline Liz sounds so amazing. In Bluebeard she sounds so cute. In Theft and Womdering Around lost she sounds so powerful. I love this album it is colourful and powerful and must have been difficult for Liz.

Four-Calendar Cafe is, in my opinion, the most accessible album ever made by the Twins. The music is still completely original, and still gorgeous, but Liz strikes more of a balance between understandable and the unknown. The album opens with the lilting "Know Who You Are At Every Age" which is my cut and dry favorite. It's all about Liz's superb phrasing and inflection. Beautiful, sad. Then there's Evangeline full of gorgeous highs, and ending with the line "I had to fantasize just to survive." Brilliant. This album boasts lot's of excellent guitar work, in lots of different styles. The peppy, country-ish slide of Bluebeard (Ladies and gentlemen, Ms. Loretta Lynn!) is an example of CT's pop sensibilities. Other favorites for reasons too numerous to mention: "Oil of Angels", "Squeeze Wax", and the amazing "Summerhead" - my second favorite song.

i had wanted to write this a long time coming. To all those Cocteau Twins "fans" who hated this album, and you know who you are, i say, traitors, fakes, charlatans!! If you even know a little about your favourite singer, you would know that this album is the absolute perfect reflection of all those swirling emotions that are inside of her. This is truly the best album there has ever been in the history of music. Of everything that the Cocteau Twins have done in their illustrious career, Four Calendar Cafe is the most personal and honest album i have heard. Kudos to Ms. Fraser for having the courage to record it. It most certainly has changed my life completely, never before did i know what brilliant music was. If i was ever to conceive of a perfect album, it would probably be called "Four Calendar Cafe!" Four Calendar Cafe!! what a brilliant name!! think about it! FCC!!

Just the other day, when I was listening to this album again, it occured to me that this, more than any other recent Cocteau Twins release, reminds me the most of "Victorialand" era Twins. It definately has that same pastoral feel on songs like "Theft, and Wandering Around Lost" and "Essence." This is an album of raw passion, and emotion, laid bare by the semi-audability of the lyrics. The Twins even dabble in a bit of country here. ("Bluebeard") This album is about as intimate and vulnerable as the Twins get. From the soulful strains of "Know who you are..." to the lullaby for Lucy Belle, "Pur" it's like having an intimate conversation with an old friend and learning everything about each other. I once thought that having dissernable lyrics would spoil the fun of listening to Cocteau Twins. Thanks, Liz for proving me wrong! SIIIIGHHHHH!

A wonderful CD and one of my favorites of the last few years. Perfect for driving the through the gothic (yes that's right, gothic) canyon walls of Superior, Arizona, or dreaming of that wonderfully perfect day in La Jolla watching the fog burn away. Squeeze-Wax, oh yes (did anyone catch the reference to surfing board wax?). A sunny day for Bluebeard, Squeeze-Wax et. al., and sublime mystery for anyone trying to know who they are at every age.

Although this album seems like the first attempt at pop-ish music, the emotions are still intenese. Love, abuse, sorrow and hope ... all of life's a mystery and Liz knows exactly how to evoke the psyche's deep pensive emotions with Four Calendar Cafe. The album begins gently, takes your mind on a dark frenzy of conceptual bliss, leaves you lingering in manic emptiness for a while, and finally drops you off where you had begun, only with a slightly more pleasant mindset. This is a great album to play at night while driving through any desolate area. It continually keeps me in awe, spellbound of a dreary, but an aesthetic lust for experience and the dreaming for fate to ultimately become necessary for redemption. Four calendar Cafe is one of the more upbeat Cocteau CDs, but don't let that stop you from enjoying a great experience that departs from the 80s Cocteau style. Very acessable, yet subtly experimental. Best Tracks: Summerhead ~ Theft, and wandering around lost ~ Oil of Angels.

After having bought "Victorialand", this was a breath of exhilaration, right from the opening notes of "Know Who You Are at Every Age" (wonderful title), to the joyous "Bluebeard", the melancholy "Essnce", in fact, every track on this monumental effort is a winner. As much as I enjoy the Cocteau Twins overall, this is the only effort that is as close to perfection from the first to last track. No fillers. No dogs. This CD belongs on the list of "10 CD's to Take With You to a Deserted Island". Some critics (and fans, too) lambasted the band for the softening of their sound in this era, but this CD has bite and beauty. Simply put, I hold this one next to "The Pink Opaque" as my favorite Twins releases.

At first, I hated this album as a whole. As time has passed though, I have learned to appreciate each song on it's own merit. Some of the moods that the songs provoke are far stronger than that of HOLV, My Truth, Essence, and Theft, for example. There are also some stompers, namely Summerhead and Squeeze Wax, which lift the album from it's sweet slumber! Only one track has failed to win me over, the, by my reckoning, awfully BLAND Oil of Angels, which stirs no emotion in me whatsoever. But this is a fine album, nevertheless, which grows, in time!

From the curiously wonderful name, to the splendor of the album covers, Four-Calendar Cafe is a CT master work to me. Because of songs like "Know Who You Are at Every Age" and "Squeeze-Wax" and "Theft...", I'll always hold this album dear to my heart and soul. I couldn't imagine anything coming close to the greatness of the album until M&K was released. With that event, my faith in CT's enduring talent was, once again, confirmed. Thanks, Twins.

While many critics blasted it as ethereal mush back when it came out in 1993, and some Cocteau fans were disappointed that they could actually understand Liz's lyrics on the album, Four- Calendar Cafe ranks as my favorite Cocteau album along with Head Over Heels. What I like most about this album is that Liz's voice is as delicate and layered as Robin Guthrie's guitar work. As it was such a finely-crafted, soft album, it caught the attention of those who up until then were unfamiliar with the Twins' work. What was most amusing about a concert I saw during the Four-Calendar tour was that several yuppie- type couples, hoping to see an Enya-esque performance there at the Universal Ampitheater, were shocked to hear the Twins' rough edges in concert, and walked out and left. Personally, my favorite track on the album is "Oil Of Angels." I thought the song was beautifully structured, and the guitar rifts have a very powerful, emotional effect. Other fans I know like "Squeeze-Wax" the best. Overall, Four- Calendar Cafe ranks as one of the few albums I know which I love every song on the album. In fact, even the 5 B-side tracks from "Evangeline" and "Bluebeard" are worth catching.
