Echoes In A Shallow Bay

Maybe I'm a late bloomer, but I've finally made my way to "Tiny Dynamite/Echos in a Shallow Bay". At first listen, this is actually very different from the Twins I'm used to, "Pink Opaque" aside. What a GREAT CD. "Pink Orange Red", "Ribbed and Veined", "Pale CLouded White" and especially "Eggs and Their Shells" are just fantastic. Once again , a 'new' CT disc kept me up till all ungodly hours and made me tired (yet pleasantly tranquil) for work. Thanks Liz, Robin, and Simon for some of the best music you've done with CT!! You're the best. :)

no matter what anyone says: great spangled fritillary is still the greatest twins-song ever!

I just want to say that the twins kick ass and they are the most original group since the Art of Noise. I think echoes for who ever went to ZEN should know echoes could be great with a electronica sound!!!!!! The Twins are the here today, tomorrow and next week!!!!!!!

This ep i must say, is a bit weird and not the kind of music i would classify as traditional Cocteau Twins. People thought once that the Twins did witch-craft, and after listening to especially the first two songs, i can understand why! Very gothic and mysterious. Since i’m from Norway, i have heard lots of music from Bel Canto(a norwegian band), who has very similar music to the stuff Cocteau Twins have on ”Echoes in a shallow bay”. Liz Frasier and Anneli Drecker (the vocalist in Bel Canto), has very similar vocals. So if you ever get hold of an album by Bel Canto, listen to ”Shimmering, warm and bright”!!! Although Echoes is a bit untraditional, i like it alot! It has really grown on me and it is a big land-mark recording. Very different. I love different music and that’s why i love the Cocteau Twins.

Wow. An aural feast for the imagination! Most of this e.p. is at full gallop, going down some harrowing, yet beautiful corridors... Very different, with interesting piano touches in the mix, ethereal guitar sounds and Liz howling into the wind... One of the more "organic"-sounding CT releases. This is especially necessary for "Eggs And Their Shells", which I find to be one of Cocteau Twins moments of concise, sonic perfection.

I like to think of this one as "Cthulu's Chorus Line". Not my favorite. But Great Spangled Fritillary envisions a vast golden orrery turning in the night sky (giant space Buddha!). And once the lovecraftian beast is awake, it drags me through the icy, monolithic, futuristic jazzy bustle that follows, to the gratifying end, where a lone La Boheme diva-of-the-NYC-streets hawks her humble wares in the sweet winter night for all who will hear. Now that would be a Broadway musical worth seeing!
